That's a great question and one that could be either quite easy or a bit difficult to answer because, ultimately, it comes down to what you need in your next vehicle. The Sentra and Altima are both four-door sedans with terrific features inside and out, so if all you know is that you want a small car, then either could be a great choice for you. Whether you are currently looking for a Nissan Sentra for sale but wondering if the Altima might be a better choice or are just starting your search for a car and trying to consider all of your options, we are here to help.

While the Sentra and Altima look fairly similar from the outside, beautifully exemplifying Nissan's modern design, there are some significant differences between them. So, let's take a look at various aspects of both models, highlight their key differences, and see if we can figure out which is right for you.

Overall Size and Design

One of the simplest ways to differentiate these two sedans is by size. Simply put, the 2025 Sentra is compact and the 2025 Altima is midsize. They're both four-door models and they have a lot of design elements in common, but if you see them side-by-side, there's a clear difference in size. The compact Sentra is about 183 inches in length and just over 71 inches in width; by comparison, the Altima is nearly 193 inches in length (almost a foot longer) and nearly 73 inches in width.

While that difference in width isn't especially dramatic, the difference in length is certainly noticeable and can impact which model is right for you. It's important that you consider how much room you have in your life for a vehicle, particularly if you have a garage that might better fit something like the Sentra than the Altima.

Power and Fuel Efficiency

Another key aspect to consider when choosing between these two models is the kind of driving experience each of them offers. For starters, the Nissan Sentra features a 2.0L 4-cylinder engine that provides 149 hp and 146 lb-ft of torque, which is great for a compact car. The Altima, on the other hand, has a 2.5L 4-cylinder engine that delivers up to 188 hp and 180 lb-ft of torque; this greater power is perfect for the slightly larger midsize model, showcasing how well Nissan understands car design.

Both models come with front-wheel drive standard; the Altima also has all-wheel drive (AWD) available, while the Sentra doesn't. If you're not interested in the enhanced traction of AWD, then that might not matter to you, but it's something to remember when considering them.

There's also a small but noteworthy difference in fuel efficiency between these two models. The Sentra gets an estimated 30 MPG in the city, 40 MPG on the highway, and 34 MPG combined. By comparison, the Altima gets an estimated 27 MPG in the city, 39 MPG on the highway, and 32 MPG combined; going with an AWD model, however, reduces those numbers to 25 MPG in the city, 34 MPG on the highway, and 28 MPG combined. Again, that's not a huge difference, but it's worth keeping in mind if you prioritize fuel efficiency.

Interior Space and Comfort

We've looked at the differences in size between these two cars, and that translates into some interior aspects of note. In terms of passenger space, both cars are almost identical because Nissan makes passenger comfort a priority. The Sentra has almost 44 inches of legroom up front and about 35 inches of rear legroom, while the Altima similarly gives you about 44 inches of front legroom and just over 35 inches of legroom in the back. One notable difference is that the Sentra has 14.3 cu.ft. of cargo volume in the trunk, while the Altima has 15.4 cu.ft. of cargo space.

That difference of just over one cubic foot doesn't seem like much on paper, but it can matter if you really load up your trunk. This is where the difference in size is most noticeable, and it can make your life easier if you're trying to fit a couple of golf bags or some luggage into the back of your car. Beyond this, both of these cars are incredibly comfortable inside, with a six-way adjustable driver's seat and cloth seating, plus heated front seats available. There are also some other minimal differences; for example, the highest SR trim for the Sentra features leatherette seating, while the pinnacle Altima SL has leather seating.

Tech Features to Consider

Both of these cars have great standard and available technology for you to enjoy, but there are a few interesting differences between them worth considering. The Sentra starts with a seven-inch LCD infotainment system with a second screen in the Driver Information Center. Support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is standard with a four-speaker sound system, plus you get remote keyless entry that makes it easier to get in and get going. If you want to take things further, then a larger NissanConnect eight-inch infotainment display is available, along with an eight-speaker Bose Premium sound system.

The Nissan Altima has more to enjoy, in part because it has a fourth trim level beyond what is offered for the Sentra. Starting features on the Altima include the NissanConnect eight-inch infotainment system that's available for the Sentra, along with a standard Driver Information Center screen and a six-speaker sound system. Available options include a NissanConnect 12.3-inch infotainment display with Nissan Door-to-Door Navigation, support for wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and more. You can also get a wireless charging pad up front, as well as a nine-speaker Bose Premium sound system. Overall, the Altima has more to offer if you're looking for high-end tech features.

Excellent Safety Systems

We're pleased to say that both the Sentra and Altima come with the Nissan Safety Shield 360 suite of driver assistance features to help protect you and your passengers on the road. This includes Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Rear Automatic Braking, and a Lane Departure Warning to let you know if you're drifting from your lane. You also get a Blind Spot Warning, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, and High Beam Assist that switches off your high beams automatically to avoid blinding oncoming traffic.

You can take things even further with available options on both models, such as an Intelligent Forward Collision Warning that watches even further ahead of you. The Altima also has ProPILOT Assist available, which enhances adaptive cruise control by adding lane centering to make long road trips less stressful.

Which Nissan Sedan Is Right for You?

Now that we've had a good look at both models, you might have a better sense of which is best for your needs. The Nissan Sentra is the smaller of the two, with superior fuel efficiency, plenty of room inside, great tech features, and comprehensive safety features. With the Altima, you get a larger body, more power under the hood, more options for enhanced tech, and additional safety systems available, like ProPILOT Assist.

One last note: though both cars are very accessible, the smaller Altima starts at a lower price, so keep that in mind and consider which one best meets your budget. You can't go wrong with either; it all depends on what you're looking for—and if you're still not sure which model is right for you, we're here to answer your questions and help you find the perfect car.
