First released in 1982, the Nissan Sentra has always been a small car, though it has changed and grown throughout the decades since it hit the road. One of the first couple vehicles released here in the US under the Nissan name (Nissan sold cars in the US as "Datsun" prior to that), the Sentra found immediate success and began building a legion of fans. In large part, its early popularity was due to the incredible fuel efficiency of the first Sentra model. A lot of drivers in the early 1980s still had the oil crisis of the 1970s in their minds when shopping for a vehicle, so remarkable efficiency was a tremendous selling point.
The original Sentra was a subcompact car even smaller than its modern incarnation, which paired perfectly with the efficiency of its engine. Since then, the Sentra has been through numerous generations and redesigns, with each new model delivering a wide range of impressive features and great overall performance. For its second generation, the Sentra continued to be available in a variety of styles, including sedan and hatchback; the third-generation Sentra that launched for the 1991 model year was available as a two-door or four-door model, as earlier generations had been. For its fourth generation and the 1995 model year, the two-door version was dropped, and the Sentra exclusively became a sedan, as it is today.
Although it had grown in size with previous redesigns, the 1999 model year brought a fifth-generation Sentra that officially became a compact car (rather than a subcompact). It has remained in this compact class ever since, providing a surprisingly spacious interior for such a small vehicle. Numerous generations have followed, including a sixth generation for the 2007 model year, a seventh generation for 2013, and an eighth-generation Sentra that kicked off with the 2020 model year.
